The Strathmartine Community Larder is a modern food co-operative tackling food poverty in the Kirkton area of Dundee initially, we now operate across Strathmartine with a larder in St. Mary’s too. We provide a service where users pay £4.00 and can take a bag of shopping away which includes tinned goods, toiletries, cleaning products, cupboard items etc. To include 2 items from the fridge or freezer is £1. We also offer bags of fresh fruit and vegetables for £1.00. The Larder allows users to choose their own items which change on a weekly basis at a discounted price while also helping to reduce food waste in the local area.
The Larder aims to tackle food poverty in areas with high deprivation by enabling access to low-cost food alongside offering advice on how to create nutritious, cost-effective meals. Alongside this we aim to provide a space for experts in other areas such as Mental Health and money matters to come along and help people.
Our core values are centred around, Community Spirit, Empathy, Respect and Collaboration, currently the Larder has a Part Time staff member who then relies on a volunteer team who are all dedicated to these values and the mission of helping those in need in communities. We are housed at present in Kirkton Community Centre and our shop in St Giles Terrace, spaces that allow us to be at the centre of the community and opportunity to partner up with existing support agencies, helping the community in a greater capacity.
We measure our social impact against the following priorities:

We use Fare Share as our main supplier who deliver trays of food to projects like ours for £2.00 per tray, these have been great some weeks. However, there is always room to expand the supply we receive so we went to the following other suppliers.
Since the Covid19 Pandemic began we have had great support from Alexanders Community Development they have delivered food regularly and have also been working hard to renovate of new premises. We are grateful to John Snr and his team for their hard work and dedication.
We are grateful to numerous local and national funders who have helped us get to where we are and will continue to support our growth in the future. Without them we wouldn’t be where we are today.
